Because

Because the leaves are turning
And so am I
Turning into myself
Rather than relentlessly running away
Seeking the light
Shining out of the broken places
Learning
Owning
My own truth and tale
History that I’m deliberately
Turning into herstory
Changing that story arc
Even as I accept it
Embrace it
Me

Sometimes,
It seems a woman needs to
Let things die off,
Fall back,
Like these spiraling fiery leaves
To allow her to grow more
Full and lush
More verdant

Because at this time
In my life
I am choosing to grow from the
Ashes and celebrate my
Scars, coating them
In silver, copper, and gold
Lit from within
