In the Garden

In the gardenShe learned herself

Loving the sun and the

Dirt under her nails

The disreputable cutoffs

The smell of tomato leaves

The bees mumbling songs

Over fallen golden pears

That crumbled into the soil

Making the basil grow

Drawing Pops to pick it

Shared with neighbors through the fence

Eggplants fat and purple

Peppers lethally hot

Dogs sitting in the nearby shade

Sunflowers nodding, roses blooming,

She grew Soul from seedings

Behind the faded yellow garage

Once upon a life

At 726 Rutger Street
